What is a direct democracy?

A direct democracy is a form of government in which citizens decide directly on political issues. Citizens can put forward new proposals themselves (popular initiative) or vote on laws already passed by parliament (referendum). Therefore, in direct democracies, the people not only elect their representatives (parliament) but also decide directly on legislative proposals.

The best-known example of a direct democracy is Switzerland.
