EU Council praises relations with Liechtenstein
Relations between the EU and Liechtenstein have deepened further in recent years, according to the EU Council in its conclusion on relations.
On 25 June, the EU Council presented its biennial conclusions on relations with non-EU members in Western Europe. Among others, the EU member states’ representatives praised relations with Liechtenstein, writing: “Relations between the EU and Liechtenstein as an important and reliable partner continue to be very good, dynamic, and have further deepened and diversified since 2022.” Liechtenstein is reliably implementing its obligations within the European Economic Area (EEA), according to the EU Council.
The country is actively tackling common challenges such as digitalization and climate change, and is continuously involved in international organizations such as the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, writes the report. The Council also welcomes the increased cooperation in justice and internal security since Liechtenstein joined Schengen in 2011, as well as the country’s efforts in sustainability.
The EU Council goes on to praise Liechtenstein’s cooperation in the area of corporate taxation as “constructive, transparent and open”. It also welcomes the country’s application for membership of the International Monetary Fund.
The Council gives the EEA good marks overall. The three EEA countries of Norway and Iceland, alongside Liechtenstein, are helping to make the European single market more resilient and dynamic, it writes.
The Council is open to the EEA countries’ desire to intensify cooperation on health issues. It also wants to remove barriers to trade in agricultural products.
